A Malaysian embassy spokesperson recounted to me the message Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamed made to the Chams regarding the Malaysian attitude towards the
aid they gave (I do not know the details of when Mahathir addressed the Chams).
Mahathir evidently advised the Chams to:
Be conscious that you are a minority people in Cambodia.
Live with the fullest respect for other ethnic groups.
The basic tool for raising a standard of living is education.
Study hard and then work hard so you can stand on your own two feet.
Aid from abroad is temporary. Do not become too dependent on it.
