Chart DATOH August 7 - The government plans to print 100,000 copies of the Quran translation "Khmer" to be sent to Cambodia for the use of 500,000 Muslims in the country in next year's Ramadan.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was the government's continued commitment in helping to spread Islam in Cambodia after accounting for 10.200 copies of the Quran, 500 Muqaddam and 1,000 carpets to the Muslims over there on 27 July.

He said the donation of 100,000 copies of the Quran would ensure that every Muslim family in Cambodia will have a copy of the holy book after the religious texts including the Quran was burnt during the Khmer Rouge regime under Pol Pot's reign.

''The government also hopes to send a copy of al-Quran with translation Tagalog language to Muslims in the southern Philippines in the near future.

''In addition, we will print a few copies of the Quran with translations in Chinese, Korean, Ceylon, Russia and Japan to contribute to the Muslims in these countries next year, "he told reporters after breaking fast the civil servant at the Public House here last night.

According to Ahmad Zahid, this year, the Ministry of Defence aims to collect a total of RM5 million in endowment of the Quran done by the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) in collaboration with Yayasan Restu who undertake to interpret the Quran.

''So far, the first RM2 million has been raised through the contributions of corporate companies and we hope to collect the balance of RM3 million contribution from the public and corporate bodies, "he said.

Last year, the Ministry of Defense to collect a total of RM1.3 million in endowment the Quran and it is used to supply the Quran to Muslims in rural areas in the country and Muslim minorities abroad.
